Rotoscopy
Our Rotoscopy (or “roto”) artists manually create a matte for all elements on a live-action plate so it can be composited over another background. The process is often used to separate foreground elements from undesirable backgrounds. This technique is labor-intensive and requires a keen eye for detail to trace the outlines of the subject frame by frame.
Paints & Prep
Paint Prep (or simply “prep”) is the process of preparing VFX plates for further processing and integration of CG elements. It can involve removing unwanted elements (like rigs, wires, or temporary marks), fixing issues in the footage (such as dust, scratches, or lens flares), and creating clean plates. This step is essential for ensuring that the compositing stage has the cleanest possible elements to work with.
Camera Track & Matchmove
Match Move, also known as motion tracking or camera tracking, is the process of matching CGI elements to live-action footage so that both sets of elements move in perfect unison. Our team ensures that the virtual and real elements blend seamlessly, maintaining the geometry, scale, orientation, and position relative to the photographed objects in the scene. This is crucial for scenes where CGI elements interact directly with live-action elements.
2D Compositing
2D compositing is the art of seamlessly merging various visual elements into one cohesive image or sequence, creating a polished final look. Our compositing artists expertly layer live-action footage, CGI elements, and backgrounds, adjusting colors, lighting, and shadows to ensure all components blend naturally. They utilize cutting-edge software to remove unwanted backgrounds, refine colors, and isolate objects, enabling a perfect integration with live-action shots. The addition of subtle effects, like shadowing and lighting, enhances the realism, making all elements appear as though they were filmed together from the start.
